Our flatware is crafted by the Herdmar family who have been producing cutlery for over a hundred year. They craft their exceptional products in Caldes das Taipas, about an hour north of Porto. We love their commitment to excellence and sustainability, and the family-owned environment made them a natural fit for Fable.
How We Found Them
While in Portugal, our initial search for ceramic partners led us to the city of Braga. During our stay in the northern region, we were recommended to have a meeting with Fernando Castro, a nephew of the Herdmar family.
We admired the craftsmanship of their metalwork, but were even more impressed by their hospitality. As we started to create cutlery, it became clear that Herdmar was the perfect partner to Fable.
Mirroring the longevity of the Herdmar family business, the metals they produce are built to stand the test of time. The Herdmar team utilizes high quality 18/10 stainless steel from local sources. The steel in Fable cutlery is 3.5mm thick, giving a dense and perfectly weighted feel when you pick up your knife and fork.
About The Family
The Herdmar location was founded by Manuel Marques in 1911 who set out to create the world’s best knives in his mill on the banks of the Ave River in Portugal. Over a hundred years later, this lone mill has expanded into a thriving family-owned company.
When you visit the Herdmar location, you feel as if you are a part of their family. As we walked around their facility we were welcomed with waves and hellos from everyone, most of whom were siblings and cousins -- a true family business.
